Living the Dream!

It seems impossible that a year has passed since I updated this blog. In that span of time the house was completed, the landscaping put in place, the driveway, walls, fences and outside lighting created. In October 2010 we made several massive shopping trips for indoor and outdoor furniture and shipped household and personal goods from Boston. We invited Dimitri's family from London and Athens to spend 2 weeks during the New Year's holiday with us in the house. The wood burning stove works great! We were toasty and warm inside while it was in the 50's outside. Perfect weather for hiking, exploring and getting to know the locals.

In mid-June we returned, with friends and family following soon thereafter for visits through the end of July. The weather was in the 70's to 90's, the water temperature was 80 degrees, the tourists and taverna owners were happy and, despite the economic unrest and riots taking place in Athens, we were untouched by all of it. We found great pleasure in living inside the dream that was formerly inside our imaginations. The reality was even better than the fantasy.

The bounty of the garden was the real thrill for me this summer. To roam the garden coffee cup in hand, see what was ready for picking, THEN decide on "what's for dinner" was a true "locavore" (eating in season and local) experience. Our very own CSA (community supported agriculture). In the end there was so much produce that we gave away bags and bags of it. I heard there is a custom on the island where, in the dead of night, neighbors drop off bags of extra zucchini to their neighbors. I fully understand this!

I created a photo album that chronicles the 6 weeks we spend on Naxos this summer. You can roam through it and enjoy the beauty of the island by clicking on "NAXOS SUMMER 2011" under the archives in the right hand column.
